Jesse didn’t move, just as surprised as Jude that he had hit him. They stayed like that for a couple seconds, and I was afraid of what would happen next. Jude’s temper was much like his father’s, and he could kill without a second thought. I just wondered if he was capable of killing his brother.

Then, without any warning, Jude jumped up and swung back at Jesse. I yelled out in protest, but neither of them heard me. Jesse dodged the punch to his face, but he couldn’t avoid the blow to his stomach. He doubled over in pain and that was Jude’s chance to uppercut him in the jaw. Jesse fell flat on his back, sending a little cloud of dirt and dust into the air.
